Braised Red Cabbage (Dusená červená kapusta)

 

 

Do you like or love cabbage?
My husband and I LOVE cabbage….my kids won’t eat fresh cabbage and TOLERATE certain cabbage dishes.
Luckily……..I am the one who cooks so I am the one who decides What’s For Dinner most of the time.
Braised Red CABBAGE  in Slovakia known as Dusená červená kapusta is very popular side dish in most parts of Central Europe.
Every family….every cook…has their own version of Braised Red Cabbage.
The same goes for my dad  and I. We both make our braised cabbage similar way my grandma’s recipe, yet the taste is different and by now my family can tell which is mine and which is grandpa’s.
Braised Red Cabbage (Dusená červená kapusta) can be served as a side dish to variety of meats and main dishes, but I mostly serve braised red cabbage with roasted pork…….especially my Pork Chops with Red Wine Reduction.

 

 

 

 

PRINTABLE VERSION
Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Large Red Cabbage (sliced)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 2 Tsp Caraway Seed
  • 2 Apples (cut in quarters)
  • 1/3 cup Red Wine
  • 1/3 cup Red Wine Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar

STEP 1: In a large pan heat oil and butter. Add finely chopped onion and cook until glossy. Add the cabbage, caraway seed, salt and pepper and stir till well combined. Stir in the apples.

STEP 2: Cover and cook on medium for 15-20 minutes. Don’t forget to stir it once or twice. After the cabbage is soft, but not mushy remove the lid.

STEP 3: Pour in red wine while turning the heat up a bit. Let the wine reduce to almost nothing. Add the red wine vinegar. Let it reduce a bit and stir in the brown sugar. Cook for another 5 minutes or so.

STEP 4: Taste and add more spice as needed.

    This look delicious!! I loooooove cabbage! This recipe look soooooooo good! Too bad my fiance does not eat cabbage! But I may try it for myself anyways!
