How To Stop Wasting Food or The Fridge Inventory Project

HELLO FRIDAY!

….and TGIF to all of you in this wonderful……unpredictable…..magical world we know as Cyber Space!

It’s been a long and exhausting week at Casa Bailey…..

….sick kids…..appointments…..getting my passport renewed before my trip next weekend….(Bloggy Boot Camp VEGAS 2012 here I come).

Twitch is back at school, but Hormone Boy is bedridden with nasty flu….and tell the truth….I am enjoying it….

….he NEEDS ME…..my 6′ tall teenager needs his mommy to take care of him…..I am loving every second of it.

One of the tasks I had to do last week was to clean and organize my fridge….having two boys in the house who are old enough to fend for themselves this was never  my favorite task…..till few weeks ago

….I would usually find so much forgotten food….stuck somewhere in the back…..reminiscing about the good old days when it was fresh….

….thinking How To Stop my kids from Wasting Food in my Fridge….

Few weeks ago I found my delicious smoked salmon hidden in the back and……yes, spoiled…..I cried….then I was craving smoked salmon…then I cried some more….then it hit me…..

Inventory….I need to have a visible inventory of items in the fridge…..

  • it would stop the food waste
  • it would give me a quick reference when making meals
  • it would let my kids see what choices they have without staring into the fridge for 10 minutes & telling me there is nothing to eat
  • it would help my kids to make healthy school lunches & snacks
  • it would help to make weekly grocery list in seconds

It’s been three weeks and it works like a charm….I found I way HOW TO STOP WASTING FOOD IN THE FRIDGE…..and get my kids to make healthier food choices at the same time.

This was one of the easiest projects I ever did…..

Few months ago I found reusable chalkboard stick-ons at Chapters and I thought they were neat so I bought couple packages for future projects.

Fridge Inventory

Once I figured out how I wanted my Fridge Inventory to look like I got buys.

STEP 1: Get thin board or cardboard.

STEP 2: Cover it with scrapbooking background paper.

STEP 3: Stick chalkboard tiles onto the cover board.

STEP 4: Tie a ribbon to the top for hanging and you are ready to write down your fridge inventory.

Now, it would be easier to use actual blackboard , but I didn’t have one and I didn’t want to waste money on another board.

It doesn’t matter how and from what you will make your Fridge Inventory board……bottom line is…..it works…..& it will save you time and money!

I also put some chalkboard tiles on my fridge (they are super easy to move and remove) to write down menu for the week to help me make our dinner faster…..and another to remember what leftovers and prep foods for quick meals are in the fridge…..

So now that I revealed my secret on How To Stop Wasting Food in the Fridge I am going to grab cup of delicious and piping hot java and visit my friend Paloma over at THE COFFEE SHOP because it is Friday and that means COFFEE FRIDAY!

Come over and join us!

  1. I was working on a fridge device a few years ago that barcode scanned everything going into and out of a fridge. It didn’t really keep track enough to make it useful but it was amazing when you printed out a list of what you still had in the fridge. Truly shocking when it reminded you of all the jars of things half eaten at the very back of the bottom shelf.

I am an organization freak so scanning barcode would be great for me. I would probably make my own coded for home cooked meals, lol

What a fantastic idea! I think many of us are guilty of wasting food especially when something unexpected happens and you forget the fish in the fridge! Great inspiration!

What a great idea! I hate my fridge… it’s so narrow and deep… but well, that’s another story… I think I need one of these not because I have a lot of stuff in it, there’s not even that much room, but just to know what’s in there (it’s hard to even take a look!!!) anyway… I guess I had to vent! I am sorry your son is sick… but happy you are enjoying the “taking care of him” part :) Thank you for joining the “Party” You are such an awesome friend!

Great idea!!! I always forget what’s in the back of the fridge until I find it. Then, it looks kind of SCARY.

Sometimes we have the BEST intentions to make something with an ingredient; and then “real life” rears its ugly head, and our plans are diverted until we can hardly recognize the ingredient anymore … sigh. This is a great idea!

  8. What a brilliant idea! This is a problem I am CONSTANTLY facing…my fridge gets too jumbled with stuff, and by the time I remember the food is there, it has to go in the trash! Will definitely be giving this a try, thanks:-)
