Happy Thursday, to all of you wonderful people!
If you read my yesterday’s post you know I am away for few days dealing with son’s health issues.
I am not sharing with you recipe today, but I thought it would be good time to share with you my culinary experience at MAD GREEK CAFE in Baker, California.
Let me just start by saying: ” I am a big fan of Diners – Drive Ins and Dives & Guy Fieri.
Every time we travel anywhere in North America I make sure we visit eating places Guy recommends on Triple D. It is if you will …. my little obsession ….. It could be worse, right?
During our last family vacation to California en route from Vegas to LA we stopped at MAD GREEK CAFE in Baker, California for lunch.
Before we left home I did little research about the Mad Greek Cafe …. I came across many negative comments ….. many positive comments …. real mixed feeling ….
…. I had no idea what to expect …. I was hoping for the best since I was dragging there my family & my best friend’s family ….
If worst came to worst I was prepared to throw Guy Fieri under the bus for this one.
Well, we pulled into the empty parking lot around noon mid September (warning bells went off in my head).
The outside looked old & it had seen better days especially the huge missing sign ….. the inside looked tired & gaudy.
It was in a need of a little face lift and some TLC.
It was filled with lots of Greek & Italian statues …… pictures ….. mismatched decorations …. signs….. chachkas everywhere…
…. whatever you can think of it was probably somewhere there.
I wanted to call Robert Irvine & Restaurant Impossible to came & rescue them!
At this point my entire family was giving me “the look” so I told them to “MAN UP”.
I am glad they did ….. despite the first impression the food was very good …. quick & affordable.
The Mad Greek Cafe is set up as cafeteria style restaurant which is perfect for a quick lunch especially with starving children
and whiny husbands.
Since we were a large group of 9 we decided to try few different things.
According to the Mad Greek Cafe outside sign they have the best GYROS in the USA so of course …. I had to get my Gyro on …..
Gyros were delicious and filling. The meat was tender and full of flavor. The Tzaziki sauce had the perfect crunch and the perfect amount of garlic.
…. the rest of my family ordered …..
Onassis Burger - done perfectly, the meat was juicy and the pastrami on top brought it all together.
Zucchini fries – cooked well, but still crunchy. Not greasy at all.
Beef Souvlaki – combo was very good. Beef was tender and flavorful. The rice was different
not the Greek rice I am used to , but not bad.
Greek salad – one of the only meals none of us really enjoyed. The vegetables were not fresh. They were mushy from sitting in a dressing for too long.
Baklava – delicious. Lots of honey, nuts and cinnamon. The best I ever had.
Milkshakes – made from real ice cream. They were thick, creamy and hit the spot. My kids were in milkshake heaven – the best they ever had.
So all and all we had a great meal for reasonable price & I can take off another Triple D restaurant of my long list.
Tip: Don’t judge a book by his cover, but honestly someone should clean it up a bit.
Don’t forget …. Keep Smiling …. Keep Cooking!
